How To Reset Windows 10 To Default Factory Settings

Windows 10 holds the ability to factory reset the device without affecting any essentials. It improves the performance thus making the device faster. Before you proceed to reset the process, take a back up of all the important data that you would not like to lose. As performing reset Windows 10 can wipe out all the installed programs and files.

  1. Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left end. Navigate through settings (the gear icon represents settings).
  2. Select “Update & Security”-→ “Recovery”.
  3. This displays two options – Reset this PC and Advanced startup. If you choose “Reset this PC”, everything from the system wipes out and you can start up fresh. “Advanced Startup” option gives the option to boot PC from disc or recovery USB drive. Select “Get Started” under the option of resetting this PC to begin the reset process.
  4. Now, either select to keep all your files on the system or remove everything. Choosing the latter removes all personal files, apps, and settings. It is important to note that, whichever option you select, the reset process deletes all applications and everything else returns to default settings.
  5. On the next window, you get to choose from “Just remove my files” or “Remove files and clean the drive”. The former is a good option in terms of speed. However, if you are giving PC to someone else or want to erase data, then choose the latter option.
  6. The next window warns that resetting Windows 10 PC removes all the personal files, user accounts, installed applications, programs, and any other changes that are made to settings.
  7. If you are sure to reset your PC, then click on the “Reset” button. This might take several minutes. Ensure that this is an irreversible process and do not click reset until you are confident that you want to remove all files, apps, and data from PC.
  8. Click on “Continue” whenever prompted.

That’s it! Once the reset process is done, your Windows is now with default factory settings. If you are facing performance issue earlier, probably you have noted that the system performance is far better than previous.

Apart from the above specified traditional process to reset Windows 10 PC, the user can also choose to reset Windows 10 from Command Prompt. Though Command prompt cannot help to reset Windows 10, still it opens a System recovery page from which you can easily choose to reset your PC or laptop.

  1. Right-click on Windows icon to choose “Command Prompt (Admin)”.
  2. Enter ‘Systemreset’ in the specified column and hit enter.
  3. This takes you to the system reset page wherein you get to choose from the “Keep my files” or “Remove everything”.
  4. The next window warns about losing data with the reset process.
  5. Click on “Reset” which takes several minutes to finish.

After the reset process, your PC will restart.
